How to Build Amidst the Storm

Build on Solid Foundations in a Shaking World

The world is tense. Governments are unstable, anxiety is spreading, and insecurity touches every life—across all ages, ethnicities, and languages. In times like these, when everything feels like it’s shaking, we need to return to what truly matters and ensure our lives are anchored to unshakable foundations.

Unfortunately, many places and communities lack a shared understanding of what’s essential. As the psalmist asks, “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)

We must remind ourselves: our foundation is not found in public opinion, political debates, or even family traditions. “No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)

Each of us has a unique role in building the church and influencing the culture, according to God’s design and calling. But we all must build on the same solid foundation—rooted in Truth, forgiveness, grace, and the purposes of Christ.

To push back against the rising tide of decay and anxiety, we must:

  1. Reorder our lives with simple devotion to Jesus.
  2. Create space in our weekly rhythms. Rushed, out-of-control living suffocates our souls and damages our families and communities. It’s time to slow down and intentionally build a life centered on Christ and deep relationships with others.

Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 are a powerful guide for us today:
"Warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.”

Here’s how we can live this out:

  • Warn those who neglect their spiritual health or disrupt the well-being of others.
  • Encourage the discouraged—speak hope and courage into their lives.
  • Help the weak who feel lost or overwhelmed.
  • Be patient with everyone, even those who frustrate or challenge you.
  • Reject retaliation—instead, make space for creative, redemptive love.

This kind of love requires God’s wisdom, and we can only gain it through a spacious, listening spirit.

Yes, life is challenging and may grow even harder. But you can stem the tide—within your own soul and in the lives of those around you—by anchoring your life to Christ and cultivating an ordered, spacious way of living.

Let’s pray for fresh insight into purposeful, foundational living. And let’s support one another as we build on the unshakable foundation of Christ.

With you,
~ Coach Tom
