I used to have a poster on the wall of my office that was captioned, “Dead Sea Fishing Club.” If you are familiar with the Dead Sea, you know this is a crazy statement. The Dead Sea has no fish in it. If is the saltiest lake in the world, saturated with minerals and full of all kinds of chloride and bromide. My poster, however, was a kind of faith statement based upon a vision that the prophet Ezekiel had. (Ezekiel 47:1-12)
In Ezekiel’s visionary encounter with an angel, he saw and experienced a river that flows from the temple in Jerusalem for 21 miles and into the Dead Sea, bringing life and healing with wherever it goes. The river even brings life to the Dead Sea. All kinds of fish appear and are sustained, in the Dead Sea, by the river coming from the temple.
This river of life is symbolic of the life and power of the Holy Spirit moving in and through believers in Jesus Christ. Ezekiel 47:9 reads, “… where the river flows everything will live.” Jesus spoke of this life when He said that out of those who believe in Him will flow “rivers of living water.” (John 7:37)
God’s wants us to bring the life and power of God wherever we are and wherever we go – to work, play, with family, in the neighborhood … everywhere. The life that He gives us to give away is tangible – this life is the person of the Holy Spirit, given to all who believe in Jesus.
It could be that you are a believer, but you are not living a spiritually active life – that your faith is not being “activated.” Possibly you think or feel that this Life from God is in others, yet somehow not in you. I want to remind you of some good news; if you are a believer, the life of the Holy Spirit is in you! (Romans 8:9-11) You simply need to ask for His filling and take some steps (that often involve risk) to obey His leading, relying on His power.
The Christian life is not a matter of becoming a better person, it is a life of following Jesus. This means we obey His directions by the power of the Holy Spirit, just like He obeyed the Father by the power of the same Spirit. This is exemplified in prayer for those around us, care for them and responding to God’s will on their behalf. It is an exciting life. It is a life of miracles. It is a life that brings life wherever it goesl
Are you walking/swimming in the river of life? Are rivers of living water welling up within you and positively impacting and bringing spiritual life to those around you?
If you want to grow in this lifestyle, simply and soberly pray for God to fill you with His Spirit today – and seek to obediently respond to His Word and leading. Let’s see what He does through us, “for where the
River flows everything will live!”
