Living Well In Turbulent Times
It seems there is new and ongoing upheaval and violence across many areas of the world. There are unsettled feelings and anxieties almost everywhere. How should we live in such times?
Let’s remember some key truths from Scripture:
- We are receiving a Kingdom that can’t be shaken. The end of Hebrews 12 indicates that God will allow/cause shaking in the world so that only the eternal things that cannot be shaken will remain. In other words, God will shake the hell out of the earth, so the things of heaven are what remain. This is good news, not bad. “Since we are receiving a Kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”” (Hebrews 12 28-28) The Kingdom of God is within and among believers – heaven is in our midst. (Luke 17:21)
- The primary battles of this life are in the spiritual realm, not against people. “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12) This means we need to be people of prayer and discernment. We must recognize evil for what it is and stand against it. We also need to recognize the things that are from God and stand with/in them.
- The world really is a spiritual battleground, and we need to actively engage in the battle. Jesus described that the Kingdom has been advancing in new ways since the coming of John the Baptist. (Matthew 11:12) Spiritual battle and violence are taking place in the spiritual realm. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8), and to set people free from bondage (Luke 4:18-19). We forcefully engage in the battle by actively and intentionally agreeing with and obeying God’s truth. We don’t become violent. We simply bind the work of the enemy in the name of Jesus. We command him to stop and let go of what he is doing in an area or a life, and we move in the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish the just and reconciling work of God.
Make sure that you are tending to your relationship with the triune God. For it is the peace of God that crushes the work of Satan. (Romans 16:20) From your position of peaceful relationship with God, conform your life to His Word and obey His leading. Allow the shaking, and hold on to the real and eternal things that remain with thankfulness.
