Some people live to fulfill their wants. It’s as if they were born knowing very clearly what they like, dislike and want. Others find it more difficult to clarify and express their desires. Toward which end of this scale do you lean?
It is unhealthy to be driven by our desires, neglecting the promptings, direction or call of the Lord. It is equally unhealthy for us to be ignorant of the desires God has put within us. It is very important to be aware of our internal desires and learn to bring them to God for His sharpening and supply.
Prayer is the appointed Kingdom means for obtaining what we need. Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8).
Matthew Henry wrote in response to these verses, “Pray; pray often; make a business of prayer, and be serious and earnest in it.”.
We must learn to operate according to how the Kingdom works. Much is transacted through prayer. We must learn to ask, as a beggar looking for needs to be met. We need to ask, as a traveler whose cell battery died and has lost all GPS. We ought to seek, as if our lives depended on it. Let’s learn to knock on heaven’s door, as we need shelter from a winter nor’easter.
By prayer we knock. Whatever we pray for, aligned with the promises and purposes of God, shall be given to us. We don’t control God with our prayers, we access Him and His will.
Whether Jew or Gentile, young or old, rich or poor, clued in or clueless, all are welcome to the throne of grace, if we come in faith.
God, like a loving earthly parent, desires to give His children what they ask of Him. Parents are often foolish spoilers, but God is all-wise; He knows what we need, what we desire, and what is fit for us. Our heavenly Father does not call us to pray only to refuse to listen. Nor will He give us what would be hurtful. So, don’t be afraid to pray what is in your heart.
Let's learn to pray early and often every day. We will get "better" at praying. We will get more adept at releasing the treasures of heaven on earth … but only as we make communion with the Father and prayer our primary spiritual practice.
