You May Have More Authority Than You Realize

Does it ever seem to you like nothing much is really happening in your neck of the Kingdom of God?

How long has it been since you have seen significant transformation in the lives or health of people you personally know?

Does it feel like you are just going through the motions of faith – which quite possibly is not faith at all?

Jesus lived an expression of faith that made a difference.  He seemed to engage heaven and earth - the spiritual and relational, to great affect and effect.  Paul referred to Jesus as the second Adam because He walked in the purposes of God’s created order.

God formed people in His own image, and intended them to rely upon His wisdom and direction, and to represent His will, in His authority, on the earth. (Genesis 1:26-28; 2:15-20)  Jesus understood this and lived accordingly, saying,

“By Myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and My judgment is just, for I seek not to please Myself but Him who sent Me.” (John 5:30)

He had an intimate relationship with the Father and gladly submitted to His purposes.  The fruit of His faith-life was that “The people were amazed at His teaching, because He taught them as one who had authority.” (Mark 1:22)

In Matthew 18, Jesus instructs us as to how we can process salvation, sin and forgiveness.  In this context, He also highlights the power of our discernment, declarations and prayers.  He calls us to stand in that same Adamic role – relying upon God, discerning His will and representing Him and His ways.

Living like this, our words release resources from heaven. (Matthew 18:18-19)  What incredible authority and responsibility we have been given!  So, we must be very careful.  We must live and pray in the name of Jesus. (Matthew 18:20)  We must live and pray as Jesus would, according to God’s created order.

This important priestly and intercessory role in life is best-understood and worked out in relationship and agreement with others.  Others can see where we are blind, and they can supplement our weaknesses.  When two or more are seeking God, and agree as to their perception of His will, the authority and power of their prayers are multiplied.  This spiritual agreement with heaven and others becomes like a three (or more) stranded chord in Christ that is very powerful.

Seek God’s will (on your own, or better, with somebody else) about your situation.  Share your discernment with others to see if you find agreement regarding what you believe God wants.  Once you have prayerful agreement, start to declare it.  Release the resources of heaven.  Believe God will act in His and your behalf.  Cooperate with His leading, and look for His transforming power.  You may find that you have much more authority in Him than you realized.
